PA demand skyrockets — 8 key statistics

The demand for physician assistants is growing, according to a Merritt Hawkins report.

With a physician shortage looming, and more people gaining health insurance, the need for PAs is at an all-time high. The 2014 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives found these eight key statistics regarding PAs:

1. Average PA starting salary: $105,000
2. Searches for PAs were up 177 percent from 2011/12 to 2013/14
3. PAs in the hospital setting: 39 percent
4. PAs in a primary care setting: Around 33 percent
5. PAs in a specialist setting: About 66 percent
6. PAs are 9th most requested Merritt Hawkins search
7. Female PAs: 62 percent
8. Number of PAs up 100 percent over the past decade
