Here are five things to note:

1. The Burrell Institute for Health Policy and Research will focus on the border’s health policies, hosting conferences and creating a transnational health journal.

2. The institute will center on disease surveillance as well as health disparities and outcomes. It will also tackle issues presented by the Affordable Care Act and new Medicaid patients.

Students and faculty will focus primarily on the Hispanic population.

3. The border presents a number of health challenges, including the influx of immigrants and high rates of poverty.

4. The medical school will be closer to achieving accreditation after implementing this research requirement.

5. The medical school will integrate the health institute into its offering in fall 2016, when it opens. The first medical school class will encompass 162 students.
