Microsoft: Healthcare needs a ‘security intervention’ — 4 things to know

As more health insurance companies report data breaches affecting millions of users, Leslie Sistla, chief information security officer of Microsoft Worldwide Health, is calling for a “security intervention in healthcare,” according to eWeek.

Here are four things to know:

1. Because providers often need quick access to patients’ records in serious situations, the healthcare industry often suffers data breaches as personal, health and financial information intersect.

2. To combat this problem, Microsoft plans to equip healthcare IT professionals with strategies and guidance in a new blog series.

3. Microsoft plans to share its findings regarding healthcare security, which includes “some surprising gaps in the kinds of data protected under the HIPAA. “

4. Ms. Sistla said healthcare organizations should take a proactive approach, rather than a reactive approach to cybersecurity.
