Meet the physician who was named Ohio’s 1st poet laureate: 5 things to know

Amit Majmudar, MD, a diagnostic and nuclear radiologist with Radiology Inc., in Dublin, Ohio, has significant talents beyond the clinical setting.

Ohio Governor John Kasich named Dr. Majmudar the state’s poet laureate, a two-year honorary position. Dr. Majmudar writes poetry and has published two novels: Partitions in 2009 and The Abundance in 2011, according to a report from The Columbus Dispatch.

He is currently working on a new poetry collection titled “Dothead” slated for March 2016 publication. Lawmakers created the official Ohio poet laureate position in 2014 and a selection committee named Dr. Majmudar to the first spot.

Dr. Majmudar plans to link with the Ohio arts community through his poetry and engage high school students, according to the report. Themes such as identity, history, spiritual faith and mortality are recurring in Dr. Majmudar’s work.

1. He has a special interest in nuclear medicine.

2. He attended medical school at Northeastern Ohio Universities School of Medicine and completed a residency and fellowship at the University Hospitals of Cleveland.

3. He is the son of immigrants and grew up in Cleveland.

4. One of his poetry collections was a finalist for the Poetry Society of America’s Norma Faber First Book Award and another received the Donald Justice prize.

5. Dr. Majmudar is affiliated with Diley Ridge Medical Center, Mount Carmel East Hospital and Mount Carmel St. Ann’s.
