Meet the physician Apple hired to head digital health: 5 things to know about Dr. Mike Evans

Popular "YouTube" physician Mike Evans, MD, will have a huge affect on family medicine after accepting a new role with Apple, according to CBC News Toronto.

So who is this physician Apple is trusting to help develop the future of "worldwide health innovation"?

Dr. Evans is a Toronto-based physician known as "DocMikeEvans" online and formerly on staff at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Here are five things to know:

1. Apple and Dr. Evans partnered previously on a new line of digital healthcare. He is known for his YouTube videos. The videos are cartoons featuring Dr. Evans' voice to explain common medical problems.

2. He currently serves as the lead of digital preventative medicine at Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute in Toronto and is an associate professor of family medicine and community medicine at the University of Toronto. He will remain in Toronto and commute between there and Cupertino, Calif., in his new role.

3. In addition to his regular practice, Dr. Evans was a physician at the Sochi Olympics and has been profiled in both professional journals, including JAMA, and publications such as Readers Digest. "Orange is the New Black."

4. The Canadian Medical Association named him among the top 10 innovators in health and he has been listed as one of the top 45 Canadians over 45. The Royal Society of Canada recognized him with the 2015 McNeil Medal for outstanding communication of science and medicine to the public. One of his videos about the health benefits of exercise was even referenced in "Orange is the New Black."

5. Dr. Evans believes physicians will prescribe apps in the future and phones will be able to assist patients in making healthier life decisions.
