Here’s how severe physician burnout is — 7 statistics

Burnout is at peak severity for 10 percent of physicians, according to the Medscape National Physician Burnout, Depression & Suicide Report 2019.

Medscape surveyed 15,069 physicians from 29-plus specialties. Physicians were asked to rate the severity of their burnout on a scale from one to seven, one meaning “It does not interfere with my life” and seven meaning “It is so severe that I am thinking of leaving medicine.”

How physicians rated their burnout:

One: 2 percent
Two: 8 percent
Three: 18 percent
Four: 25 percent
Five: 24 percent
Six: 12 percent
Seven: 10 percent
