Florida Department of Corrections signs contract to fill healthcare coverage gap in state prisons — 4 takeaways

Centurion of Florida signed a contract with Florida Department of Corrections to serve as the medical provider in Florida’s prisons, according to Miami Herald.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Centurion, a joint venture between Centene and MHM Services, is replacing Corizon Healthcare as the provider in the state’s prisons.

2. Corizon terminated its agreement with Florida last fall after receiving months of complaints about insufficient inmate healthcare and dozens of lawsuits.

3. Centurion also has five statewide contracts to provide correctional healthcare services in Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Tennessee and Vermont.

4. Centurion CEO Steven Wheeler said the company is, “leased to be able to work with the department to improve the quality of services and care levels provided to this population. We also recognize the importance of maintaining sound financial discipline on behalf of the state and its residents.”
