FDA approves temporary balloon device for obesity treatments: 5 key notes

The FDA has approved a new temporary balloon device to treat obesity.

Here are five key notes:

1. The device, called the ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System is designed to facilitate weight loss in adult patients.

2. The device is delivered into the stomach via the mouth through a minimally invasive outpatient endoscopic procedure. Once in place, the device is inflated with a sterile solution.

3. However, potential side effects for the procedure include headache, muscle pain and nausea from the sedation and procedure and in rare cases even  heart attack.

4. The device should not be used for certain patients, including those who have had previous gastrointestinal or bariatric surgery.

5. The ReShape Dual Balloon is manufactured by ReShape Medical.
