Columbus sees 11.5% increase in health insurance costs for city employees: 6 things to know

The Columbus (Ohio) City Council will spend $177.20 million on health costs for its employees this year, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Here are six things to know:

1. This increase is the greatest annual increase in insurance costs by employees and taxpayers in about 10 years.

2. The money will cover the medical, dental, vision and prescription drug costs, among other services, for Columbus’ 8,200 city employees.

3. Of the total cost, taxpayers will finance $107 million of the insurance costs.

4. Insurance accounts for 13 percent of Columbus’ general-fund budget.

5. Although insurance costs have increased, Columbus has not experienced a significant increase in number of employees since the beginning of 2015.

6. The increase is attributed to coverage of more hospital and physician visits, as well as more prescription drug coverage.
