The survey included 761 adults who have health insurance and make healthcare decisions for their households as well as 204 healthcare providers and payers.
Here are five insights:
1. While about half of consumers said they take complete responsibility for their health, less than 6 percent of providers believe consumers take on this responsibility.
2. Forty percent of providers and payers report consumers don’t know how to take command of their healthcare, while less than 5 percent of consumers believe the same to be true.
3. Fifty-five percent of patients report they need provider and payer encouragement or help to prioritize healthy living, while 90 percent of providers and payers say encouragement is necessary.
4. Although 71 percent of providers and payers believe patients are “shopping” for their care, only 34 percent of consumers are more likely to shop for care now compared to one year ago.
5. Consumers rank quality of care as a top priority when choosing a provider, even though providers and payers think insurance acceptance drives patients’ decisions.
“Consumers and healthcare professionals have very different views on patient empowerment and control,” said Rohan Kulkarni, vice president of strategy and portfolio, Xerox Healthcare Business Group.
