Are you appropriately dressed? ACS outlines professional surgeon attire

The American College of Surgeons released a statement outlining appropriate professional attire for surgeons both in and out of the operating room.

The guidelines are based on professionalism, common sense, decorum and evidence:

  • The statement notes surgeons should change out of soiled scrubs before meeting with family members post-operation.
  • If surgeons perform cases where their scrubs become contaminated, they should change their scrubs before performing more operations.
  • Surgeons should not dangle their masks.
  • Surgeons should not wear OR scrubs throughout the hospital unless wearing a clean lab coat over them.
  • Surgeons should change OR scrubs daily.
  • When performing invasive procedures, surgeons should cover their mouth, nose and hair to prevent wound contamination.
  • Surgeons should not wear earrings or other jewelry when performing procedures.
  • When interacting with patients outside the OR, surgeons should wear professional attire.

“This statement reflects our strong commitment to surgical patient safety. It’s important to provide an optimal surgical care environment for our patients,” said David B. Hoyt, MD, ACS’ executive director. “These recommendations for a comprehensive dress policy for surgeons will help us to achieve that goal.”
