The new standards were created “to ensure that all infants and children in the United States receive care in a surgical environment matched to their individual medical, emotional and social needs,” according to an ACS news release.
New standards for ambulatory surgery centers performing surgical procedures on children include:
- Designated preoperative and recovery areas for pediatric patients
- A pediatric anesthesiologist must sedate all children less than one year of age.
