5 key statistics on physician-generated revenue for hospitals

Here are five statistics on physician inpatient and outpatient revenue generated in 2016 based on the Merritt Hawkins “2016 Physician Inpatient/Outpatient Revenue Survey.”

The statistics reflect the average annual net inpatient and outpatient revenue physicians generate on behalf of affiliated hospitals. Here are the statistics:

1. Specialists generated around $1.6 million for their hospitals per physician, up from $1.4 million last year. However, this is still down from a high in 2004 at $1.9 million.

2. All physicians—specialists and primary care—generate $1.5 million on average for their hospital. That’s up from last year’s $1.4 million.

3. Primary care physicians generate $1.4 million in 2016, down from $1.5 million last year on average.

4. Orthopedic surgeons generated the most on average, at $2.7 million, for affiliated hospitals. Revenue generated increased in 11 of the 18 medical specialties, according to Dallas Business Journal citing the report.

5. Neurosurgeons and cardiologists both generated around $2.4 million per physician for affiliated hospitals.
