2024’s residency match: 7 things to know

Here are seven things to know about the 2024 main residency match, according to Healthgrades:

1. In 2024’s main residency match, 38,941 positions were filled. This is a 0.5% increase from 2023.

2. A total of 50,413 graduates applied for 2024’s residency match. This year’s match saw an increase in non-U.S. citizen international medical graduate applicants, nearly triple the amount of 2023.

3. This year’s applicants had the largest number of available programs and training positions in the match’s history.

4. Primary care specialties represented 46.8% of all positions offered in this year’s match.

5. For emergency medicine, 2,891 positions were filled for 2024, an increase of 13.9 percentage points from 2023.

6. Just six OB-GYN positions went unfilled.

7. For this year’s match, 2,562 positions went unfilled. This is a decrease of 123 positions from 2023.
