1. Joseph F. Pugliese, MD, founder of the first ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center — now called Eye Care Specialists — in Pennsylvania, passed away at the age of 87.
2. Norwalk (Conn.) Hospital held a gala to benefit its new ambulatory surgery center, which will open its doors January 2015.
3. Bitterroot Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Hamilton, Mont., added Timothy W. Woods, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, to its staff.
4. Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente’s Wailuku (Hawaii) Ambulatory Surgery Center has earned a three-year accreditation from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, making in the only AAAHC-accredited center on Maui.
5. The Rochester (N.Y.) Laser Eye Center has donated three LASIK surgeries to three local first responders under its Eyes on Our Heroes program.
6. Self-managed healthcare real estate company Physicians Realty Trust acquired the 15,662-square-foot Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield (Texas). The surgery center is a joint venture between United Surgical Partners International, 20 physicians and Baylor Scott & White Healthcare System. The total purchase price was $8.5 million.
7. Meridian Surgical Partners, LLC, a national operator of outpatient ambulatory surgery centers, announced today that it has settled a qui tam lawsuit brought by a former employee at one of its centers, Treasure Coast Surgery Center in Stuart, Fla.
8. Hurley Health Services, based in Swartz Creek, Mich., and Lapeer (Mich.) County Surgery Center entered a new affiliation to form an integrated system of care for the surrounding community.
9. CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Physicians Ambulatory Surgery Center-New Braunfels (Texas) received a 2013/2014 APEX Quality Award for patient satisfaction for the sixth consecutive year.
10. AtlantiCare Surgical Center in Cape May, N.J., acquired a Lens-X femtolaser for performing cataract surgery.
11. Peter Kurzweil, MD, a partner at the Surgery Center of Long Beach (Calif.) coauthored a study on the efficacy of traditional meniscus repairs.
12. Kennedy Health System has proposed a $55 million overhaul of its Kennedy University Hospital campus in Cherry Hill, N.J., including a new surgery center.
