10 facts on stroke in the US

May marks American Stroke Month, aiming to bring awareness to strokes, the fifth leading cause of deaths in the U.S., according to Wallethub data.

Here are 10 facts on strokes in the U.S.

1. Someone has a stroke every 40 seconds and 795,000 Americans experience a new or recurrent stroke annually.

2. Stroke trails behind accidents as the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S.

3. Thirty-five percent of American adults have experienced at least one sign of a transient ischemic attack, or a mini-stroke.

4. Ischemic strokes account for 87 percent of strokes. The remaining 13 parent are hemorrhagic strokes, when weakened vessel erupts and bleeds into the surrounding brain.

5. Females account for 58.4 percent of stroke victims.

6. Experts expect stroke incidence to increase 20.5 percent between 2012 and 2030.

7. Eighty percent of strokes are preventable.

8. High blood pressure costs the U.S. economy $48.6 billion annually.

9. There are nine mobile stroke units in the nation, with each carrying a $1 million price tag.

10. By 2030, projected stroke treatment costs will total $183 billion, up 156 percent from 2010.
