Texas Small Physician Clinics Accepting Fewer Medicaid Patients Than Ever

More small clinics and physician practices in Texas than ever are leaving Medicaid, and less than one-third will take on new patients, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported.

Larger healthcare systems are left with the burden of the steadily increasing number of Medicaid patients, which is now about 3.4 million.

According to the Texas Medical Association’s report, administrators cite low reimbursement rates, claims denial increases and regulatory red tape as pushing them to drop Medicaid acceptance.

Medicaid reimbursements, which are set by the state, were cut 20 percent at the beginning of this year for physicians to treat Medicare-Medicaid dual-eligible patients.
