Reluctant States May Get Second Pass at Health Insurance Exchanges, Obama Administration Says

The Obama administration said last week that states that have not adopted health insurance exchanges may get a second chance to implement them before the government steps in, according to a NewsOK report.

According to the report, only 11 states have fully embraced the federal funding given to support the establishment of state-run insurance exchanges. The exchanges are intended to serve as "marketplaces" where individuals and small businesses can comparison shop for health insurance.

According to the report, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is working on a new partner model that would let state agencies run the exchange, possibly without the need for legislative organization. State agency leaders will convene in Washington, D.C., next month to discuss the new proposal, which could provide an option for state leaders who balk at the concept of a full-fledged exchange.
