OIG Will Scrutinize ‘Place of Service’ Codes for Work Done in ASCs

Physicians’ Medicare Part B “place of service” coding for services performed in ASCs will be a target for monitoring and enforcement by the HHS Office of the Inspector General in the 2010 fiscal year, according to Work Plan recently released by the OIG’s office.

The Work Plan notes that Medicare reimbursements are higher for services performed in the physician’s office than in a hospital outpatient department and, with certain exceptions, in an ASC.

“We will determine whether physicians properly coded the places of service on claims for services provided in ASCs and hospital outpatient departments,” the Work Plan states.
