Nebraska Medicare Open Enrollment Starts Earlier This Year

Nebraska Medicare beneficiaries need to enroll in a prescription drug plan this year, according to the Nebraska Department of Insurance.

According to a Nebraska City News Press report, the open enrollment period for Medicare Part D now occurs from Oct. 15, 2011-Dec. 7, 2011. The plans also include several new benefits, including lower prescription costs, wellness visits and preventive care.

Medicare beneficiaries who typically use the December holidays to make decisions about coverage options should plan to have that discussion earlier, according to the report. Medicare decisions for 2012 must be made no later than Dec. 7, 2012.

Medicare and the Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program both provide free, unbiased counseling to residents trying to make a decision about coverage.
