Minnesota Senate Panel Approves Republican Alternatives to Health Insurance Exchanges

The Minnesota Senate Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee has advanced two Republican proposals that aim to counter the federal healthcare reform law, according to a Minnesota Public Radio News report.

One bill, sponsored by Sen. David Hann (R – District 42), would let consumers save for healthcare expenses with designated health insurance premium accounts. The bill would serve as an alternative to health insurance exchanges mandated under federal healthcare reform law.

The other bill, sponsored by Sen. Chris Gerlach (R – District 37), would limit any potential health insurance exchange, a move Sen. Gerlach says is essential to prevent the Obama administration from setting up an exchange without the Legislature’s consent.

Supporters of health insurance exchanges say they’re concerned the Republican proposals would benefit employers rather than consumers, according to the report.
