Massachusetts Pushing "Full Steam Ahead" With Health Reform Implementation

Massachusetts is still fully planning to implement the federal requirement that most Americans buy health insurance, despite the ongoing debate over the constitutionality of the mandate, according to a Boston Globe report.

According to Glen Shor, executive director of the agency that runs the state's health insurance exchange, planning for full implementation of the healthcare reform law is still "full steam ahead." The Supreme Court announced yesterday it will hear a case challenging the mandate.

Despite the challenges to the mandate, many states have been moving forward under the assumption that the Affordable Care Act will survive. Massachusetts is ahead of many states; in 2006, the state instituted an individual mandate and created an online insurance marketplace. The state law provided the model for the national one.

Mr. Shor said despite this progress, the state still has a long way to go. Massachusetts is still working on expanding coverage to the 2 percent of state residents who remain uninsured.
