Robotic surgery is covered by routine and customary laparoscopic CPT and ICD-9-CM coding practices, existing medical policies for laparoscopic surgery and current payor contract rates.
Coders do not need to include unlisted procedures codes or modifier 22 for robotic assist. No additional payment allowance is made for the robotic surgical technique.
The study, printed in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, looked at Medicare-aged men and concluded surgical outcomes may not be improved, but the robotic procedure may allow shorter hospital stays and less blood loss.
