Incorrect Place of Service Code Use Could Lead to Overpayments

The place of service code 11 should only be used for minor surgeries in physician offices, not ambulatory surgery centers, according to AAPC.

The Office of the Inspector General found in 2009 that 83 percent of outpatient surgery claims billed with POS 11 were performed in an ASC or hospital. Incorrect use of this code could result in overpayment.

Medicare providers should audit all POS 11 services reported in 2009 to reclaim any overpayments.
