Healthcare Bills Driven Up by Hospital Practice Acquisitions

Hospital acquisitions of independent physician practices are driving up overall healthcare costs, according to the Charlotte Observer.

A service could cost double what it did prior to a hospital acquisition, the report shows. While hospitals have higher overhead costs, they also receive about 80 percent more Medicare revenue than physicians for some services.

The number of physicians employed by hospitals doubled in the last 10 years.
