Here’s what you should know:
1. The U.S. House of Representatives already passed a CHIP funding resolution and is expected to approve the Senate’s spending measure as well. It’s expected that President Donald Trump will sign the measure into law.
2. CHIP funding lapsed at the end of 2017. Several states are close to running out of their reserves. CHIP covers approximately 9 million children.
3. The Congressional Budget Office issued a new estimate on the bill’s cost in early January that lowered the estimated price tag of a five-year extension from $8 billion to $800 million, which political analysts believe made reaching the extension easier.
