Developers and providers will now have access to anonymous EMR information — including billing information, patient history and appointment data — from athenahealth’s 40,000-provider network. The goal is for outside developers to solve problems with the EMR through an ecosystem of apps on top of athenahealth’s service, according to the report.

The next step will be an application store, where physicians can pick the ones most relevant to their practice’s needs.
