Hundreds of patients received bills for care they thought would be covered by their Aetna insurance policies. The confusion stems from the 2010 acquisition of the medical center by new owners, who were told by the state to attempt to continue commercial insurance contracts for one year.
Aetna says the contract had not expired in 2011 when the bills were incurred. The hospital, however, has asked patients to pay the difference between the contracted rate and the regular, higher charges.
