74% of physicians favor Medicaid work requirements — 5 things to know

Nearly three-fourths of physicians support Medicaid work requirements, according to a Merritt Hawkins survey conducted in March.

Here's what you should know.

1. The single-question survey asked physicians about their position on Medicaid work requirements. Merritt Hawkins, a physician search firm and a company of AMN Healthcare, received completed surveys from 667 physicians.

2. These are the physicians' reported stances on the requirements:

  • Very favorable: 56.6 percent
  • Somewhat favorable: 17.8 percent
  • Neither favorable nor unfavorable: 8 percent
  • Somewhat unfavorable: 8.4 percent
  • Very unfavorable: 9.2 percent

3. The survey's margin of error is less than 1 percent.

4. "Many physicians have been frustrated for years because Medicaid often pays less than their costs of providing care. Physicians have to limit the number of Medicaid patients they treat for that reason and want to focus on those who need care the most," said Merritt Hawkins Executive Vice President Travis Singleton.

5. Kentucky, Indiana and Arkansas are moving forward with work requirement policies.
