5 states with the highest & lowest annual wages

Physicians in South Dakota make the highest average annual wage, according to a new WalletHub ranking.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across two dimensions: “opportunity and competition” and “medical environment.” The rankings were based on analysis of 18 metrics, which were each graded on a 100-point scale.

Where physicians make the highest average annual wage: 

1. South Dakota
2. Mississippi
3. Alabama
4. Indiana
5. Iowa

Where physicians make the lowest average annual wage:

47. Maryland
48. Hawaii
49. California
50. New York
51. Washington, D.C.

Note: Average yearly wages were adjusted for cost of living.
