5 key takeaways on ACOs in 2017

Health Affairs published a study conducted by Leavitt Partners and the Accountable Care Learning Collaborative documenting the growth and spread of ACOs and alternative payment models.

Here are 5 facts to know on ACOs:

1. By the end of the first quarter of fiscal year 2017, there were 923 public and private ACOs across the U.S. Those ACOs covered more than 32 million people. Approximately 10 percent of the total U.S. population has coverage through an ACO.

2. Since the first quarter of fiscal year 2016, 138 new ACOs were established and 46 dropped accountable care contracts.

3. Around 166 ACOs expanded the number of contracts they participate in.

4. Concerning total contract makeup in 2017:

715 are commercial contracts
563 are Medicare contracts

5. Florida, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Illinois, Texas and California have the most ACOs between 49 and 104.
