Here are four observations:

1. In 2016, 7 percent of counties had one marketplace payer, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

2. Of ACA consumers, 20 percent will purchase plans in counties with just one payer in 2017.

3. Although analysts anticipated intense insurance rate increases in counties with just one marketplace payer, the rates are comparable to those in counties with more competition. This is likely due to the fact that payers had to submit 2017 rates to regulators in early 2016, prior to other payers deciding to drop out of the marketplace.

4. The federal government reported ACA enrollment spiked 154,000, to 8.8 million between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016, compared to the same time period in 2015.
