3 Lessons From Massachusetts' Healthcare Reform

Health Affairs published an analysis of Massachusetts' newest healthcare reforms, and determined three lessons for policymakers to learn, according to Healthcare Finance News.

A healthcare cost control bill enacted in the state on Aug. 8 was the third major effort to address cost containment since the 2006 state healthcare overhaul. It set annual spending targets, encouraged the formation of accountable care organizations and established an independent commission to oversee the state's healthcare system.

The three lessons are:

1. Implementing near-universal coverage will increase pressure on government to being controlling overall healthcare spending.
2. Cost control measures have to occur gradually.
3. The effectiveness of new cost control laws will all depend on changes in providers' and insurers' behavior.
