$1.4M awarded in Medicare fraud investigation case

A federal jury in Tacoma awarded close to $1.4 million to Lori Cook, finding the former billing manager at Harrison Medical Center was fired in retaliation after reporting billing irregularities, according to a report from The Seattle Times.

Harrison is a subsidiary at of CHI Franciscan Health, and Ms. Cook was an experienced billing manager who took on a backlog of Medicare billing when she took the job in 2011, according to the report.

Ms. Cook reportedly found “systematic upcharging” of Medicare revenue and was reportedly blamed for this after reporting the discovery. According to the report, Harrison argued Ms. Cook’s lawsuit should be dismissed because they never submitted false Medicare claims.
