Why All-Payer Claims Databases Could Cause Concerns Anesthesia Practices

State-level All-Payer Claims Databases evolving rapidly and while knowing how your offering compares to competitors can provide an advantage and minimize negative consequences, there may still be concerns for anesthesiologists, according to the most recent Anesthesia Business Consultants blog post.

Some of the information typically collected in an APCD includes encrypted social security or member identification number, patient demographics, type of insurance product, type of contract and information on service provider.

The APCDs contain a good deal of information on anesthesia practices in their jurisdictions. Most APCDs are producing reports that show utilization patterns or cost variations for the treatment of common conditions between healthcare systems, payers or geographic regions.

The concern for anesthesiologists, and others, is that APCDs and multiplying implementations of healthcare price transparency are going to drive margins down. Also, in order to take raw data and turn it into relevant and useful information requires advanced analytic capabilities, which many anesthesia practices do not have, according to the blog post.
