Lexington-based University of Kentucky College of Medicine hosted its eighth annual Anesthesiologist Well-Being Day in July, inviting friends and family of anesthesiology residents to experience a “day in the life” of an anesthesiologist at the UK HealthCare Simulation Center.
The program, launched in 2017, gives residents’ loved ones hands-on exposure to procedures such as intubation and sedation, while also providing education on burnout, depression and financial well-being. Residents’ families also learn mindfulness and stress-reduction strategies and gain direct connections to program leaders, according to a Sept. 9 news release.
UK officials said the initiative helps residents feel supported during high-stress training, ultimately aiming to reduce burnout and physician shortages across Kentucky.
