The SEDASYS System and the Future of Anesthesia Use During Colonoscopies

Both the colonoscopy rates and use of anesthesia during gastrointestinal endoscopies are projected to increase in the coming years, and the overall cost of colonoscopy screening programs will be closely scrutinized by payers and policy makers, according to an Anesthesia Business Consultants news release.

The release also mentions that the introduction of the SEDASYS Computer-Assisted Personalized Sedation System is going to affect that growth trajectory in ways that are not yet apparent. The introduction of the system might bring about revisions in American Society of Anesthesiologists’ policy and position statements such as the 2009 Statement on the Safe Use of Propofol.

ASA’s Ad Hoc Committee has now released it proposed Guidance for Directors of Anesthesia Services for the SEDASYS System. Anesthesiologists are encouraged to review the proposed Guidance and to send their comments to sedasys@asahq.org by the deadline of Oct. 28, 2013.
