The Push Toward Price Transparency Takes One More Step Forward

CMS has announced that in March it will start evaluating requests to release individual physician payment information on a case-by-case basis, according to an Anesthesia Business Consultants report.

CMS has stated that it will also generate and make available aggregate data sets regarding Medicare physician services for public consumption.

In the blog post, Tony Mira, president of Anesthesia Business Consultants, discusses the push for greater price transparency at the federal and state level and how greater competition will lead to reduced prices and improvements in quality. He gives the example of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, which has embraced price transparency.

Mr. Mira also notes, however, that objections to price transparency tend to be based more on the accuracy and reliability of price information and on the need to avoid harm to patients who might misinterpret the data. Defining and demonstrating value is the ongoing challenge for the healthcare industry.
