Gaurav Patel, MD, used an online survey tool to survey medical students who took the anesthesiology rotation when it was required in 2014, when it was coupled to the surgical rotation in 2015 and when it was not coupled to surgery in 2016. The survey asked several questions about the importance of the anesthesiology rotation to surgical education and perioperative medicine.
From the survey results, having a required anesthesiology rotation added value to the general surgery rotation in undergraduate medical education. When this rotation was paired with the general surgery rotation, students learned more about perioperative medicine than when the surgery rotation was paired with another “advanced” rotation.
Students appreciated having a week of anesthesiology with the surgery rotation.
