Study Reveals Brain’s Electrical Pattern While Under Anesthesia

A study from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows the brain has a distinct pattern of electrical activity as patients lose consciousness to anesthesia, according to Medical News Today.

The brain pattern includes slow oscillations, which reflect a breakdown in communications between different brain regions. The researchers hope a better understanding of anesthesia’s effects on the brain will help anesthesiologists maintain a better balance between too little and too much anesthetic.

Clinicians will also now know what to look for on an electroencephalograph when putting a patient under anesthesia.
