The hypotheses surrounding the experiment were that the dobutamine would produce tachycardia and vasodilation and fail to improve the microcirculation of patients with septic shock.

The results of the double-blind test showed that dobutamine increased heart rate, cardiac index and stroke volume index, which increased in 52 percent of the patients. Patient blood pressure remained unchanged but systemic vascular resistance decreased.
