Study: AP Advance Laryngoscope Speeds Up Intubation in Difficult Airways

Intubation times were significantly faster with the AP Advance laryngoscope than with the GlideScope in mannequins with difficult airways, according to a study published in the Sept. 2011 issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia.

The AP Advance is a videolaryngoscope with interchangeable blades: Intubators can choose standard Macintosh blades or difficult-airway blades with increased curvature. The study tested the hypothesis that intubatUion with the APA is no slower than videolaryngoscopy using a GlideScope Ranger in difficult mannequin airways.

The researchers trained medical professionals whose roles potentially include tracheal intubation with each device. The participants intubated mannequins with difficult airways using the APA, GlideScope and conventional Macintosh blade. The study found that intubation times were significantly faster with the APA than with the GlideScope in difficult airways.

When asked to choose one device overall for normal and difficult airways, 82 percent of participants chose the APA.
