The study used data from the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology’s Serious Complication Repository project. Authors identified more than 257,000 deliveries where epidural, spinal or general anesthesia was administered during childbirth.

The study found that there were a total of 157 complications reported, 85 of which were anesthesia-related. Although they were uncommon rare, the most frequent anesthesia-related complications was high neuraxial block. The second most frequent anesthesia-related complication was respiratory arrest in labor and delivery.
