A panel of experts conducted a systematic review of literature on the topic and discovered that literature on perioperative glycemic control in patients undergoing ambulatory surgery is sparse and of limited quality. Recommendations were then based on general principles of blood glucose control in diabetics, drug pharmacology, data from inpatient surgical populations and clinical judgment.
The report included information on necessary preoperative information, management of preoperative oral antidiabetic and non-insulin injectable therapy, preoperative blood glucose level requirements and blood glucose level monitoring recommendations.
