OIG to Continue Review of Personal-Performance Modifier Use in Anesthesiology Cases

The Office of the Inspector General in the Department of Health and Human Services has released its Work Plan for 2014, and while there are no new anesthesia issues that the OIG will look into, the review of the use of the personal-performance modifier is continuing from 2013, according to an Anesthesia Business Consultants blog post.

The OIG’s ongoing interest in the correct use of the modifier means that physician anesthesiologists who work in care teams with nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants should ensure that the documentation for any personally-performed claims shows that the physicians were present with the patient throughout the case.

The OIG’s report on the use of the personal-performance modifier is due to come out this year, according to the blog post.
