Dr. Shanafelt expressed his concerns in an article published in Anesthesiology. In it, he says physician burnout can lead to negative influence on patient compliance, patient satisfaction and quality of care. Such dim views on physician burnouts do not exclude anesthesiologists and anesthesiology program directors in the United States.
In order to address this concern, Dr. Shanafelt says healthcare organizations and institutions will need to make organizational and policy changes, as necessary, to increase support of physicians and lower the chances of physician burnouts.
