Lawsuit seeks damages for 800+ UC San Diego patients treated by opioid-using anesthesiologist

A lawsuit representing about 800 surgery patients was filed against UC San Diego Medical Center after former anesthesiologist Bradley Hay, MD, allegedly treated them while he was high on fentanyl, CBS 8 reports.

What you should know:

1. Dr. Hay had his medical license revoked and was convicted of taking fentanyl from the hospital during surgeries.

2. An attorney for the patients claimed UC San Diego did not "notify any of the patients" of Dr. Hay's actions. The hospital refused to repay any of the bills for anesthesia, and it has not audited or reviewed any patient files during that time period, according to the attorney.

3. Patients treated by Dr. Hay between April 2016 and January 2017 were possibly affected. He admitted to using fentanyl during those dates.

4. The lawsuit is seeking class-action status.

5. UC San Diego Medical Center does not comment on pending litigation, but said Dr. Hay was no longer employed.
