Twenty-six studies involved 2,959 women were analyzed. Inhaled analgesia consists of breathing in a mixture of oxygen and either a flurane derivative or nitrous oxide. The mother’s pain is reduced, but she is able to remain awake and swallow normally.
This form of treatment also starts in less then one minute. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness. Fluranes proved more powerful than nitrous oxide with fewer side effects.
