Founder of URMC’s Anesthesiology Department Dr. Alastair Gillies Dies

University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center announced that Alastair J. Gillies, MD, who established the department of anesthesiology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and served as chair for nearly 15 years, has died.

Dr. Gillies completed his anesthesiology residency at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh in Scotland and has also completed additional training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

During his tenure as chair, Dr. Gillies was involved in the recruitment of faculty, development of the clinical practice and creation of a full residency program.
