Dr. Bures said Benadryl can be used for patients who believe they are allergic to lidocaine. Some patients experience an adverse reaction to the injection or epinephrine, or may experience a “fright reaction” that causes the heart to slow.
He said in these cases, Benadryl is an effective option and comes in an injectable form as well as a pill and liquid. He said the drug can be diluted from its stock 5 percent to 1 percent very easily and substituted very efficiently for a small surgical procedure.
